Lot 22:
A Pair of Vintage Hand-Carved Luba Headrests.
This pair exemplify the artistic mastery of the Luba people from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This style of headrest was still in use at the end of the 19th century, used to preserve the hairstyles of the Luba-Shankedi women. These meticulously crafted wooden pieces serve both functional and cultural purposes. Their elegant design features a gently curved platform supported by two embracing figures, forming what is known as a ‘double caryatid’ base. These artifacts, often used to cradle the head during sleep, stand as exquisite representations of the Luba’s rich cultural heritage and artistic expression.
Occasionally referred to as ‘a support of dreams’, these headrest, experts have suggested, might feature figures as forms of protection, intended to safeguard the user at night.
